They don’t come much tougher than the Maasdam Pow’R Pull 8000SB heavy duty cable puller. This come-along is rated at a whopping 4 tons and at first sight you know it means serious business, this thing is massive. We have no reason to doubt the manufacturer’s rating, the 8000SB really is a beast and is currently the highest rated cable puller in the Maasdam line-up.
With more than 60 years in the business, Maasdam have quite rightly earned themselves a reputation for reliability and quality, and this “Made in the USA” cable puller is no exception. The 1-piece aluminium ratchet wheel and heavy duty construction allow Maasdam to confidentially offer a full lifetime warranty on manufacturing defects. In fact this puller could be overkill for many smaller jobs as the increased weight and bulky size makes it difficult to manoeuvre in tight spaces and awkward for tackling delicate jobs.
The long arm coupled with the compound mechanism allows for good leverage and the non-slip plastic grip feels comfortable and easy on the hand. And just as well, because with the notch-at-a-time ratchet taking up only a couple of inches on each motion it can be quite slow going. The two very chunky slip hooks are drop forged and feature safety latches to stop them accidentally coming off as per OSHA recommendations. There’s a lot of steel just in these hooks alone.
Overall the Maasdam 8000SB puller feels precise and firmly constructed with a minimum of play and the pawls have a reassuringly positive action, although we do recommend adding a little bit of grease to the main pulley bolt and various other pivot points to help keep things moving smoothly.
The double pulley system this winch utilizes really helps give it some grunt, but the downside is that the aircraft grade galvanized cable may seem too short for some people at around 6 feet when fully extended.
Unlike the 3 hook come-alongs that allow you choose whether or not to use the 2:1 pulley, the end of this cable is permanently fixed to the winch body, so you can’t unhook it to gain extra length. However this allows the 8000SB to achieve it’s excellent 65:1 leverage ratio.
During customer testing the big Pow’R Pull had no trouble ripping out trees by the roots or recovering stuck vehicles, easily winching out a John Deere tractor that had sunk up to the axles in swampy ground. If you don’t already have an electric winch fitted to your vehicle you may find this 4 ton Maasdam a worthy alternative.
The Pow’R Pull 8000SB isn’t even in the same class as many similarly rated cable pullers and is a huge step up from the 2 ton come-alongs . Being USA made, the build quality really impresses and many cheaper Chinese pullers would fail under the kind of loads the Maasdam takes in its stride, you would almost have to intentionally try to overload this one.
If you are looking for an all-round general purpose puller this probably isn’t the winch for you, the 34 pound weight makes it awkward for lighter duty jobs and you will quickly tire of dragging it around. However if you want a tough and reliable winch to tackle big jobs all day long without breaking, the 4 ton capacity Maasdam Pow’R Pull 8000SB cable puller should be top of your shopping list.
